John manages several firm clients, ranging from larger, public companies to smaller, emerging companies. His practice encompasses all aspects of patent portfolio development and counseling, including preparing and prosecuting U.S. patent applications, devising both U.S. and foreign filing strategies, conducting invalidity and non-infringement studies, writing formal legal opinions, and participating in re-examinations. John also conducts substantive patent due diligence for mergers and acquisitions transactions as well as strategic financing transactions.
Prior to joining Patterson & Sheridan, John was a member of the IP strategies and transactions group at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, where he conducted substantive patent due diligence, analyzed patent portfolios and wrote formal legal opinions in the context of mergers and acquisition transactions, private equity transactions, and joint venture/development arrangements. John began his legal career as a member of the litigation group at Sullivan & Cromwell, where he focused on patent and related antitrust matters.
John has substantial experience working with companies in the graphics processing, 3D computer graphics, software and microprocessor industries. John also works with companies in various MEMS spaces as well as companies in the networking and optical networking industries. John has special expertise in robotics and state-space control systems design and did thesis-related work in these areas at both Polaroid and the Space and Communications Group of Hughes Aircraft Company.
